It doesn't matter. Safety isn't an issue. Obviously if you have a fast Internet connection, it will be faster to download a program from the program mftr.'s website than wait for it to come in the mail. Don't forget to back up the installer and any related licensing documents to CD-R.

Sometimes you get other stuff with a boxed CD like a paper manual or copy of an older program, sometimes you don't. Find out ahead of time and make your choice depending on your preferences.
