Re: Problems with Automatic Updates

This is a known issue and MS has finally done something to correct it:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/blogs/mowgreen/index.php?showentry=1071

Install the Windows Update Agent first. If a message pops up stating that the WUA is already installed, then refer to the steps posted May 4th.
Then install KB927891.
Restart the system.

The issue is magnified by the update detection scan causing a buffer overflow due to data corruption. If doing the above does not totally resolve it, give this a shot
Open a Command Prompt Start > Run > type in
cmd
Click OK or press Enter

At the prompt, type in this command and then press Enter

[NOTE the spaces, please *AND*, if this is Windows XP Home, first type in
net stop wuauserv
press Enter]

esentutl /d %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Datastore\datastore.edb

Press Enter
[If this is Windows XP Home, now type in
net start wuauserv
press Enter]
Now type in
exit
Press Enter

To help prevent this issue from reoccurring, suggest you read this:

Virus scanning recommendations for computers that are running Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000, or Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822158

The article recommends that the transaction log files and database located in the WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution folder NOT be scanned by an AV

Hi,

Not sure if this is the right place to post this question but....

I have a Windows XP SP2 workstation and whenever AU kicks in to check its update status it takes over the machine. 100% CPU for 5 to 10 minutes. New programs will not start, everything dead slow. If I get Process Explorer running and syspend the WUACTL process then everything works fine. If I resume it 100% CPU for the time and then the workstation is usable again.

Any way to de-install/re-install it?
Reset it some way?
Other than disabling the service (not what I want to do) any thoughts?

Thanks
.
