Patches installed during shutdown (XP SP2)

I upgraded to SP2 only six weeks ago. When I was done, it also loaded
about 15 patches. When I SHUT DOWN XP, it said something about
installing something and took a few minutes before really shutting
down.

But I just installed the new patches and this did not happen.

What's the story behind why it installed while shutting down? I've
only seen it happen once.

Thanks.
