Re: Port 21

It seems that all else has failed , my last advice to you would be to go into
admin tools and at the bottom is services click on this and check to see what
is running and what is not if you are not to sure of anything go to
properties and check for dependencies and from that you should be able to
determine whether you neen it running or not.

you are on the right track but why these would be greyed out is probably to
do with your firewall settings and that is because either you have policy
firewall settings or you have more than one firewall, if you have more that
one firewall choose windows firewall and disable the other, they are the only
reasons that would create this situation.

keep with it you will win in the end perserverance is the keyword

Hey there
I followed your instructions & when opening WFW on the advanced tab the only
options were Network connection settings, security logging settings, ICMP
settings, default settings/restore defaults. When I click on the network
setting/local area network settings button a Advanced settings window opens
with a Services tab & a ICMP tab. The services are Eg FTP Server, Internet
Mail Acess protocol version (IMAP3). I tried to edit the service but the
options to do so were faded. I can not find anything that will allow me to
close thsi port or even stealth the port. Am I on the right track or doing
something wrong or have I a different version or something........please help.

to disable port 21 go into control panel and right click on windows firewall,
when this opens go to the advanced settings and click on this you will see
the ports that have a tick on them that they are open, the top one is the one
that has port 21 just deselect this and ok your way out, that will solve the
problem with port 21 but you may need this port to be open, if so when you
open windows firewall go to the exceptions tab click on this and select the
one that has port 21 open and change the scope from interner to intranet and
i do not think you will have anymore problems after that.

Hey there
Can any one advise me in plain english how do I configure FTP port 21. I
done a Norton Security online scan and it picked up that port 21 was open.
All other ports seem to be ok bar this port. please help......

The only way to remove it from a security scan is to
uninstall or disable your FTP service. All security
scanners will report an issue with having the FTP
service installed.

If you simply want to secure the service, and ignore the
alerts from Norton, ensure that you are requiring user
name and password for uploads/downloads. If you are
worried about content being observed during transfer,
use IPSec to protect, or look at FTP/SSH solutions
