There are many various threats that do different things that are all
classified generally as adware, spyware, virus, worm, trojan.
For adware and spyware, these all leak or transmit personal
information right from your computer. These are illegal in practically
all cases and are unwanted installations because they do transmit
personal information without your consent. The antispyware software
programs stop this. It is pretty simple. If you had pockets full of
money would you want everybody to know that in a dive bar full of
thugs and thieves - or a bad neighborhood ? No. That is why you
install a firewall, antivirus, and antispyware - so that nobody knows
nothing about you online except what you want them to know like your
nickname/screen name here at the group.
Check out this website which is a good full list of threats and their
definitions - what they do.

In November 2004, a critical Microsoft security vulnerability
(MS04-028) was discovered which could allow attackers to embed
malicious code inside JPEG image files. Until that time, JPEG image
files were considered immune to attack. To effectively deal with this
vulnerability, security and IT professionals need to incorporate six
new and critical content security requirements into their networks.
