Thanks so much for your feedback. What I wish to
keep private is my name, physical address and anything that
could pinpoint specifically what city I am living in.
We have a phone service for our internet use. When I entered
my IP number in the WHOIS for Arin, it came up the name of
that company with the company's address in the southeast region
of the country. If that is the most they get, that is fine. But any
identifying information to be could be dangerous.
Thanks so much!

First off, people do not have IP addresses. Computers and networked
devices have IP addresses. Hence, one cannot look at an IP and deduce
personal information about who is using the computer; like age or
weight or gender.
If someone knows someone else's IP address and is able to communicate
with it from their computer, they might be able to query the address
for computer-related information. Using what is known as OS finger-
printing, an interested party could figure out what type of OS is
running on the computer as well as what type of network services are
operational. None of this is directly available from the IP address
alone, of course.
By itself, an IP address signals location. First, the location could
be anywhere behind a firewall (e.g. a private address and not on the
Internet) or somewhere accessible on the Internet. Assuming the
latter, one could narrow the address down to a particular country or
city, maybe further.
If a computer has registered its IP address with a DNS service, which
is an expected of corporate computers and public servers, then a
"tracking system" or interested party could resolve the IP address
into the computer's name.
Armed with information such as the DNS name, one could determine who
registered the name. Likewise, for a block of addresses, one could
figure out what company owns the addresses. This might be informative
or it might not. After all, an ISP like Comcast owns a lot of IP
address space. Knowing it comes from Comcast is not going to give away
too much about the person at home using their computer to browse the
web.
The point is that there is a lot that can be figured out by combining
the IP address with other information. Thus, your open-ended question
is difficult to answer directly. Perhaps a better place to start is by
asking yourself what it is you intend to keep private.
Hope that helps,

I'm sure many don't care if the IP numbers come up themselves,
but what information comes up if there is a tracking
system and one has an IP address please?- Hide quoted text -
