will it eventually go away?

No.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post your log to http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30, http://castlecops.com/forum67.html, http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showforum=7, or other appropriate forums for expert analysis, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Thanks, POP. This is immensely helpful. It confirms mys suspicion. No-one in
my house has signed up for sex sites, but even if that was the case - and
that would be a matter of privacy and choice and freedom to do so - this
company are clearly parasitical and exploiting people's sense of shame or
embarrassment as you rightly point out. When you say that the best action is
to ignore, will it eventually go away?

The reason I am asking is that whenever I open up Internet Explorer the
nuisance is still showing up in 3 ways: (1) writes an icon onto my desktop;
(2) writes the same icon onto my start menu; (3) opens a pop-up window
saying that my account has been logged off and that I should log on. This
last problem has only started since I added the web-site to my list of
restricted web-sites. I have applied several powerful viral, non-viral, and
hijack security measures, but the problem still eludes all of them (i.e.
none of them have identied either the problem or the source of it). I have
to say that I am not entirely confident with how I have used and applied
the hijack security measures at my disposal. Anyway, my main question is,
will it eventually go away?
