Re: Legitimate Updates?

Hi Malke,

I assume I am the OP, although I don't have a clue what OP stands for.

In answer to your question about what security applications are on my
computer, it was the McAfee security package that comes with a new
Dell computer at the time the questionable update icon appeared on my
computer. Since then I have switched to the security package that
comes with AT&T Yahoo High Speed Internet (DSL). Answers to some of
your other questions can be found in my response to Jupiter Jones
above (which I know weren't yet posted when you replied.)

I read through your answer to Jupiter Jones. You have Automatic Updates
turned on and the yellow shield is from Windows Update with the
emergency VML vulnerability patch. Click on the shield and you should
get a windows that offers you the choice of "Express" or "Custom"
install. Click on "Custom" and you will see what updates are being
offered. Never install driver updates from Windows Update, but you
should install security updates.

I frankly have no idea whether I am a designated "Administrator" on my
computer. I am the only user, and it is not on a network. But there is
much about my recent transition from Windows 98 to XP that I haven't
yet had time to learn.

Your user account probably has administrative privileges. Go to the
Control Panel and then open the User Accounts applet. You will see your
user account listed and whether it is a "Computer Administrator" or
"Limited" account.

Question: I'd be curious to know what exactly constitutes "Safe Hex."
Is there a link to a site discussing this topic?
