Re: DOS game crashes XP

I pretty much agree with Richard's summation.
The more productive thing might be to email the MS security folks
with a heads-up that this indicates a failure of the vdm to trap things
that can be harmful to the hosting XP, that might be a route to other
more dangerous issues than the DoS this DOS app examples..

Just be sure to make the case, and not, as shown by this thread,
leave room for misinterpretation as to the concern.

XP "tries" to be compatible with legacy software but there is no
guarantee
it will work or not cause a problem with the operating system. It would
be
extremely unlikely [I hate to ever say impossible] that this has anything
to
do with malware. Best practice is to keep computer current with critical
security updates but again that does not mean there will never be crashes
with incompatible software. I have had old programs and utilities that
simply will not work with XP and often they locked up the computer
probably
as a result of processes trying to use the same hardware interrupts,
memory
space, etc.

You are saying, then, that XP is seriously flawed?

I am somewhat aware of ways NTVDM responds (or fails to respond) to HW
access requests by DOS programs. I do not think that XP can crash as a
result of any activity of a DOS program unless (a) there is something
wrong
with the security model of XP, or (b) there is a flaw in XP/NTVDM.
