You are better off anyway not downloading so-caled free games from the
Internet.

WinXP runs a DOS emulation. Whether or not I am better off not downloading
games from the Internet, the reason WinXP doesn't run 'real' DOS is to
prevent the very thing I seem to be experiencing.

I can understand how a DOS program might crash an NTVDM process. But how can
a DOS program crash Win XP?
