Re: Patches, IE, Firefox

Firefox has had to patch some of the same holes that MS patched in IE over a
year before Firefox was released. Just because you're using a different
browser doesn't mean you can ignore security. This also holds true even if
you completely dump Windows in favor of Apples' OS-X or Linux. All OS's
(except possibly OpenVMS and IBM's OS/360 descendents) have bugs that
manifest themselves as security holes. It's just that because Windows is
the 600 pound gorilla all the cyber-jerks and cyber-thieves are going to
attack Windows. Should Linux or another OS replace Windows as the dominate
OS it will be subjected to the same type of attack pressure.

I stopped using IE two months ago and only use Firefox.

Good for you. It's a nice browser.

How much
should I worry about getting the MS patches?

Every bit as much as you did before, however much or little that was. The
threats haven't gone away.

You should also now worry about getting the firefox patches about as much
as you used to worry about the IE ones.

I'm always surprised at "professionals" who STILL have to be asked:
"Have you checked (event viewer / syslog)".
