Well, as a final comment: I did pass leaktest 16 from firewallleaktester.com,
I passed all of them, how I did it, is another matter.

How, is the key issue, actually.

When I first tested the Kerio personal firewall, together with anti-spyware
(not McAfee !) and McAfee antivirus, I passed all the tests !

I doubt that - based on my own testings. But of course I cannot prove
you wrong.

I don't think I did any major tweaking in the Kerio firewall, except ticking the
box about applications starting other applications.

Sorry, but that won't stop leaktest 16. Why don't you just download
and test it right away. It will take less than 5 minutes. Your
anti-virus software will probably bark at it though. Which is
ridiculous, since it does nothing malicious. It says something about
the reliability of anti-virus products, though.

Of course, Windows is a very unsecure operating
system,

True. And the main reason outbound control does'nt work.

and I expect Vista to be more unsecure than Windows XP, at least in
the beginning.

Security expert Dan Kaminsky who has had a close look at Vista
security believes Vista is now on par or better than operating systems
such as Linux and Apple Computer Inc.'s Mac OS X - but of course only
time can tell.

Btw, if you uninstall the kerio Firewall, and then reinstall it, it may use
some of the settings of the previous settings, even if you take a paranoid
approach.

Aha. In other words the software is also buggy. Interresting. Not
least for a software claiming to provide security.

Windows in standard configuration is highly insecure. I suppose there are
many sources of information, but I have turned to www.grc.com. Just ignore
the newsgroups, nobody answers when you ask a question.

Since you seem to consider Steve Gibson a reliable source of
information I would like to point your attention to episode 48 of
"Security Now" - 30 minutes into the show. Mr. Gibson is saying the
exact same thing about outbound control. He is just being very polite
to software vendors. I am not - because I don't have to.

And the Kerio firewall being secure without paying close attention, by
configuring it, is something that you just should not expect from any vendor.

If they claim so, yes. If they claim to be in the security business,
they better make sure they appear reliable and provide what they
claim. But if you look at personal firewall vendors web-sites, it is
incredible what nonsense they can get away with.

I'm done deinstalling and reinstalling firewalls for now, and I have just
solved a new conflict between two security programs ! I think all of this
takes too much time.

Yes, personal firewalls are actually a waste of time.

Btw, I posted in the McAfee forum about outbound control, and a
"professional" responded that the firewall was not designed to handle Spyware! DUH !

He he. Maybe he was just being honest ;-)

What else do you need a third party firewall for ? Everyone, feel
free to trash the McAfee firewall.
