Re: IE7 to be Pushed to Users Via Windows Update

Today, imhotep made these interesting comments ...

"CNET is reporting that IE7 will be pushed to users via
Windows Update. This has serious implications for e-commerce
websites whose functionality might be affected by any bugs in
the software. Also to have end users suddenly using a new
browser right before the holiday shopping season could magnify
the cost any bugs that might create a bad user experience on
sites."

Good info, thanks. And, this kinda crap is /exactly/ why I have
Auto Updates set to "notify but do not download". There is no way
on God's green earth I am going to let M$ install IE7 right now!

I haven't lurked in the IE7 beta NG so I don't know what presumed
new features were added, what bugs and security issues were
presumably fixed, what side-effect bugs were created, nor how it
changes the way Windoze calls home and is trying ever harder to run
itself from the web.

So, I will just stand back out of harm's way from the IEDs about to
go off and let the early upgraders do a public beta on their dime.

I can tell you from personal experience, that the only sites I have problem with are at myspace.com. And it's not every site there either.. Just certain ones with specific layouts (it's been a few months since I went there, so I can't give you specific examples). Flash sites work fine. I've been to newegg.com, amazon.com, ebay, paypal, Franklin-Covey, and a few other e-commerce sites. I haven't had issues in any of them.

Truthfully, the only site that actually kicked me out was krugle.com and that's because they haven't tested the site with IE7 (so it's not supported). Most of the changes that I've seen with IE7 are cosmetic and some security related things.

Probably the most annoying thing is "Internet Protected" mode, which basically prevents you from downloading anything. At least it prevents you on Vista. The reason it's annoying is, you try to save something to a folder, and IE saves it in Temporary Internet Files instead. This wouldn't be an issue, except for Vista won't allow you to access Temporary Internet Files (without some degree of hassle). So, it's a matter of unchecking a box, and going on your way.

Otherwise, for where I surf at least, it's pretty stable.
