Re: Flaw finders lay siege to Microsoft Office

To be fair... MS Office absolutely dominates the market for one good
reason, its the best software there is for the tasks it does!

In some ways, but not always.

The good:

Excel was the best spread*** around when it first came out, and arguably
it still is. Word is very competent and easier to use than most of the
competition.

Powerpoint, too, is a leader in ts field, it's easy enough to use even for
a beginner, and produces some very professional-looking results.

The bad:

Early versions of Access were dire. Unfortunately it's brand-leader clout
meant that it ousted several far-superior databases (FoxPro, Clipper,
Oracle etc) from the running, despite its being nigh-on useless by
comparison. Have things changed? Well, yes, but I still reckon that Access
was to databases like the Dark Ages were to human society. Thereare still
plenty firms who won't entertain ANY kind of database development, because
of bad experiences with early Access releases.

The ugly:

Outlook.. Well, I could live quite happily with the Express version, but
the 2003 release.. well, lets just say that if I wanted a pinball table
I'd ask Williams, not Microsoft. But then, I don't. I just want to read my
email.

Also, most people don't even use 30% of the functionality of Word, Excel,
etc beyond the most basic functions. This is why other alternatives, in my
option, are equally viable (and cheaper).

By anyway, yet again, we are all off topic. Anyone have a comment about the
article?
