Yes, by doing a Repair Install but I doubt that will resolve your problem. You'll probably need to backup your personal data, format & reinstall Windows.

Then on to the Panda software issue. How come the software that was
free carried the same name as the official genuine version of Panda?
When I see the name it appears to me that it's the same, so then
naturally I would think that going to the website/company Panda
Software shouldn't be trusted. So how do I tell the difference between
genuine and illegal software - other than the fact it's free. At the
time, I didn't realize there was a genuine version.

Panda might have offered a, e.g., 90 day free-trial version but generally speaking, TINSSAAFL ("there is no such thing as a free lunch").

Now, the newsgroups. I can't figure out why I went to the Microsoft
newsgroups and my query showed up here in Google. Then your replies
didn't appear in the Microsoft newsgroup. If I post to the Google
group will the post also appear in the Microsoft newsgroups?

Google Groups archives most newsgroups. You can also post to most newsgroups via Google Groups after registering (which is how you posted the reply to which I'm responding).

You made two separate but nearly identical posts: One was crossposted to several newsgroups (WinXP Help & Support, Perform_Maintain, & Security_Admin, and Security.HomeUsers) and the other (to which I'm replying) was posted only to microsoft.public.security. As of this posting, you've replied to each thread once.

If you were accessing the newsgroups via Outlook Express:

Tools > Options > Read > Get XX headers at a time (uncheck this to get all messages on the server)

Lots of things for me to think about and, as I said before, read.
Looks like I have my job set out for me to go through all the stuff to
make sure I understand what I'm dealing with.

Oh - the version of Microsoft that I use is Microsoft XP Home SP2. I
never once thought about mentioning the version because I had posted to
several newsgroups - I thought - under the Microsoft XP newsgroup on
the Microsoft website.
