Re: What anti-malware software are YOU using?

Good post, relaxing , and not offending, even I don't totally agree with it..
I will keep my Microsoft Defender, OneCare and 2Wire modem firewall.
I have had my whip all night in vinegar, waiting for Sheny's sarcastic
remarks. Why don't you polish him a little, and teach him that to diagree is
part of life.
The guy has a site named Learn your PC, but has been visited less than 190
times since 2004. Is that due to his corrosive behavior?
Changing subjects: did you came with a solution to my problem?

My post will be long, but not for any records. It's purely so I can
give you all of the information (including my opinions for what they're
worth) at one time...

Also using a Microsoft forum for your personal advertising business is
wrong. It's like using others people property for personal benefit and not
paying. You do give advise in the forum but also do your own sneaky
marketing. What gets me is you don't recommend the Microsoft products. Never
ever Windows, Defender, nor Onecare. Only Firefox, Backice, Jetico, Kerio,
Agitum, Norton, Zone Alarm, Acronis True Image, Bootkit NG, Avast AVG,
esetNOD 32, eTrust, Kaspersky, McAfee, Panda RAV, Trend Micro, Lavasoft,
Spybot, Bazooka, Spyware Blaster, IE spyad2, CW Shredder, Hijack This,
Toolbar cop, C Cleaner, Browser Security, Popup tester, and the Cleaner,
among others.

All of the products that Shennan is 'advertising' have a long and proven
track record of being effective. OneCare and Microsoft Defender are
new. He's not being sneaky by not advertising them. They are in BETA.
What does that mean? It means that they are still being developed. It
means that they *may* contain bugs and other unwanted issues. It also
means that they can be changed or removed at any time by Microsoft.
What you see today, in as far as OneCare and MD goes, may not be what
you see tomorrow.

Before you go off on me as being anti-Microsoft, you need to understand
that I too, am a Microsoft Beta Tester. In fact, I was one of the
original "Managed" beta testers for OneCare. I just the other day,
received a T-shirt for the beta, and I had removed myself a few months ago.

Do I recommend OneCare? Yes and No. OneCare is alright for the
absolute computer-newbie. The person who doesn't want to know anything
about security, just that they are protected. HOWEVER.... At some
point in time, the 'newbie' will be forced to learn more about security
anyhow. When that happens, they are going to want more control over how
their computer is protected. OneCare DOES NOT give them that control.
The other products that Shennan and others are 'advertising' do.

One other issue that I have with OneCare is how the firewall is handled.
For example, every other firewall will put the program's connection
request into a suspended state, until you decide what to do. OneCare
blocks the programs request, and prompts you to unblock it. THEN, you
have to restart the program. As a beta tester, I filed bugs about this.
I was told "Everyone else is WRONG in how they handle the connection
requests, and we're right." (Paraphrased from the actual blog entry).

Another issue concerning the firewall is this. I use a Microsoft
product called "Office Live Meeting". Some of their own betas host Live
Meetings as a way to present materials to the testers. OneCare not only
blocked the program (forcing me to restart it), but then blocked each
set of components for the program. So, about the third restart, I shut
the firewall OFF. How's that protecting my computer? When I filed a
bug about the issue, I was asked "What's a Live Meeting?" During a
recent webcast, I brought up how all components of an application should
be grouped together in the allow (which is typical of most every other
firewall) and was told "That's a great suggestion. We'll look into it."

You are sneaky posting on a Microsoft Live Onecare forum and never ever once
in your long post mentioned the benefits of Defender nor Onecare. You are
mean and sneaky. Even when you mentioned some Internet sites, they are for
non Microsoft software sales. How can you be so unfaithful. Don't use other
people property for you personal benefit, without giving something in
exchange. Making a fast buck, be vertical. Mention the goodnes of Defender,
25 million downloads can't be wrong. The same with Onecare tuneup, backup,
antivirus, antispyware, and firewall. Sneaky Sheny.

As Shennan pointed out, this is NOT the Microsoft OneCare Live forums.
This is a security newsgroup (usenet, if you prefer, or NNTP). It is an
unmoderated newsgroup hosted by Microsoft. If you do a search for my
posts, at least one of them will contain the link to the "Official
OneCare Live Forums".

As for how come he (or others) don't extol the benefits of OneCare and
Microsoft Defender, that's because their tests have shown it's not as
secure as other products.

Don't get me wrong here. No antivirus, anti-spyware or firewall product
is perfect. And, OneCare and MD have potential. But, as I mentioned
above, they are too new (and still in BETA) for myself to recommend them
wholeheartedly. In time, they'll get better.

Patrick.
