Re: Remote Desktop over VPN connection

This box doesn't by any chance run ISA does it? Ensure that remote desktop
is checked on the remote configuration tab. Also ensure that if Windows
Firewall is turned on that there is an exception for Remote Desktop.

I'll try the test you mentioned, but I have a bit more information. There
are 2 NICS on the TS/VPN box. Each NIC has it's own IP address and unique
name in DNS. I found that if I establish the VPN connection using IP
address
A, associated with DNS entry A, I can then establish an RDC connection to
server name B, associated with IP address B. So, there is one server with
2
NICS and 2 DNS entries. There is an HP utility running on the machine
that
manages both NICS but I'm not familiar with it.

I've never set up a server as you have done here, and I don't use native
Windows VPN anyway, so unfortunately I'm out of ideas. You might try posting
this in microsoft.public.windows.server.networking as it's not really a
security issue, and you'll probably get more expert advice in there. Good
luck.

I'm able to establish a VPN connection to our network, and then use RDC
to
access all of our servers except one. With this server, I get the
following
error: "The client could not connect to the remote computer. Remote
connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to
accept
new connections. It is also possible that the network problems are
preventing
your connections. Try again later. If this continues contact your
Administrator."

The server in question is also the VPN server and runs Terminal
Services.
So could the fact that I'm connecting over VPN and then trying to
initiate
a
remote desktop connection to the VPN server cause this issue? I'm also
wondering if the administrator responsible for this server before me
locked
it down in some way that is preventing RDC over VPN. In can establish
a
remote desktop connection to this server when connected directly to the
network. We run Server 2003 standard edition and have WinXP sp2 client
machines.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

When you have the VPN tunnel enabled, can you telnet to the TS box on
port
3389 using its IP address/localhost? Can someone on the LAN in the office
successfully get to the login prompt via RD, at least, at the same time?
