Re: Domain users members of local administrator

I'm just ranting about the problem now :-)

It won't go away until the old hardware finally gives out and people won't
be able to find drivers for Windows 98 or even XP for new hardware. You have
convinced me to phone the vendors tech support each time I come across the
problem. Previously I just told the customer what the problem was and why. I
suggested using something else but in the end if I needed their business I
worked around it.

Yep.

And Vista's virtualization is not the answer for most of them
where they need to persist shared data. Some of the very old
are not even solvable with the common grant changes to the
system, though as you indicate, most are. And yes, your are
correct, the manual work-around is just not something the
average computer home users knows how or should be
expected to know how to do.

It is an MS problem only because it is a problem, but the solution
is not in their hands. We are just lucky they have gone so far
as they have in breaking application compatibility for the sake
of satisfying we who have complained loudly about the prior
state of over-indulgence of the DOS era mindset dev houses.

Again, I still believe the only answer is competitive pressure,
as expressed my customers that opt out vocally, or is through
adverse public exposure directly related to their brands.

OK, so I had to hunt down that info on Intuit finally yielding to
reason which same I could not find on their website.
However, under the SANS "Security Hall of Shame" section in
www.sans.org/newsletters/newsbites/newsbites.php?vol=7&issue=59
you can find
<quote>
In response to Newsbites' recognition, Brad Smith, senior vice
president of QuickBooks, confirmed on December 2, 2005 that
this problem will be fixed in the next major release (QuickBooks
2007), scheduled for delivery within 12 months.

Perhaps they need some emails to make sure they understand
this is now expected.

It's not just QuickBooks or even Intuit. It's Business Vision, Sage
Software, Roxio, and many others. I won't even get into LOB custom
software. All of them can be made to work as a limited user. An end
user without an IT department will probably never figure out how.
