RE: Looking for free firewall and virus protection for older compu

Thanks for your suggestions. Please let me respond to each one.

I have tried Avast. After installation I immediately updated and it updated
fine. Then I tried to scan. After it scanned 1 file, it stopped, and then
the Avast box disappeared. I then went to the Avast website and checked the
system requirements. It requires minimum of a 486 processor. So I assumed
that is why it won't work. Same as With AVG (requires 486) and Zone
Alarm(450).

1. I only have dialup. Can't afford hi-speed.

2. Haven't looked at F-Prot AV. Will investigate.

3. I have updated Windows 98. I also have Adaware installed and it works
fine. It actually finds some things and takes care of them.

Thanks,

As far as I know , there is NO firewall (no free , no paid) which will work
on that configuration.

Antivirus -> Avast's system requirements allows you run it .I haven't tried
it on such an old PC ,but it is written it should run.

Possible decision :

1) Firewall
Buy hardware firewall/router
Visit the nearest REPUTABLE computer shop and ask for router with integrated
firewall and buy it.
Note !!! It works only if you have Cable/DSL or LAN (any Ethernet) connection.
Doesn't work with dial-up.

2) Antivirus
F-prot AV
paid antivirus
It costs $ 29.95 a year but you can install it ON 5 machines.

http://www.f-prot.com/support/

My personal experience shows that it runs perfectly even on very very old
computers like your Compaq. Before buying ,try F-prot when downloading their
30 day trial.

3) Other :
make sure you have downloaded ALL updates for Windows 98 still available on
the Windows Update site:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Also ,periodically scan your PC for non-viral malware using:
Ad-Aware SE Personal (free software)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware

Its sys requirements shows you need 24 Mb ram to run it because it doesn't
have real time protection

I have an older Compaq computer with a Pentium 200 processor, 32 MB RAM,
running Window 98. I am looking for free firewall and antivirus programs
that will work on this computer. I have tried Avast, AVG, and Zone Alarm,
but they will not work properly because they require a faster processor. I
cannot afford to upgrade or buy new. Does anyone know of any free programs
out there that would work on my computer?
