It sounds like you have some spyware/malware on your system or it's trying
to get onto your system, make sure you are running the following items on
your PC:

- Firewall - even Windows Firewall in XP SP2 is better than no firewall at
all.

- Antivirus - it sounds like you are running Norton, be sure to keep the
signatures updated

- Anti-Spyware - MS have a FREE beta version of antispyware that you can
download see
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
and/or you can download many other free antispyware packages from the web
and/or purchase a commercial version like Spysweeper from www.webroot.com or
Counterspy from www.sunbelt.com

- Be sure to have the latest Serrvice pack for your OS, you don't state
which OS you are running? Windows XP SP2 will disable the messenger service
and other un-needed services, SP2 basically hardens your Windows PC.
In addition be sure you have updated it with the latest patches from Windows
Update including Office updates.

- Be sure to keep other applications updated and patched such as Adobe
Acrobat, Winzip and so forth.

Good luck.
