I don't think it has anything to do with that except for the fact that
downlevel computers can not use kerberos. If you try to access a
computer/share using an IP address then kerberos will not be used. So my
guess was that you already were authenticated via kerberos when you used a
dns address but since an IP address requires downlevel authentication then
you have to authenticate again with ntlm or ntlmv2. To find out more a
network trace would be helpful. --- Steve
