Try logging onto the laptop itself to change permissions. The link below may
help explain more about folder and file permissions.

Generally it is not a good idea to share the desktop. Instead create a
folder on your computer and give it the permissions you want for ntfs and
for the share itself. Configuring share permissions vary depending on the
operating system and XP Home can use only simple file sharing. Keep in mind
that Windows Firewall or any other host firewall can block access to other
computers on your network if enabled though you should be able to configure
exceptions or define your trusted network. Some personal firewalls will
block netbios over tcp/ip on your subnet which will keep computers from
showing in my network places until you allow it for your trusted network. If
you know the computer and share name you should still be able to access it
via UNC by entering in the run box of the client computer
\\computername\sharename . You could also substitute the IP address of the
computer with the share if using the computer name does not work because of
failure of computer name resolution. The links below may also help. ---
