Hacked is, possibly, too strong a word. It could well be that you left the
front door unlocked, so to speak. Entry through open shares isn't much of a
hack.

I once used a Linksys router. Than an SMC router. Now a Netgear router. What
can you tell me about my LAN from that? Not a whole lot, really.

What model is your Linksys? Do you have more than one computer? If the
Linksys is wireless, what security measures did you use? Disabling SSID
broadcast and MAC address filtering are no more secure than locking the
sliding screen door to your house is secure.

You need to tell us, at a minimum, is computer to router link wireless? Did
you set up anything at all like WEP security (can be cracked in three
minutes), or, better, WPA security?

Also, if you only have the one computer, you not only don't need sharing,
you don't really want sharing. Or, you need VPN, if you really do need
sharing.
