There is a gray area between what is spyware and what is a Trojan (which has
typically been picked up as part of the Antivirus applications)
This is changing as we are seeing more of the AV companies extending their
scanners to detect spyware too.
But, as has always been the case, nothing detects everything all the time
:-(

Both Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware are considered good spyware scanners (with the
Microsoft Antispyware tool looking like the best bet once it is out of beta)

As for an Antivirus application, before you go out and buy something check
out the offers on the following page:

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/downloads/default.mspx

If you used these you can get up to 12 months free (I use and like EZarmor
from CA)
