I am new to monitoring taped backups. We are using tapeware. I've printed
their instruction booklet but it's very hard to follow. The software looks
rather simple; however, it's difficult for me to tell if the drives are
actually backing up.
I recieved only one log in 4 months that actually said 100% complete and
gave me the disaster recovery information. This leads me to believe the
other logs are initiating but not completing the backup. Our backups are
scheduled nightly; however, unless I manually set a new backup sechedule for
each day and each tape the jobs never appear to end. Usually my report gives
me job start times and objects selected but I don't get the Job end time and
the final result.
My question is:
1. Is there a way to check the backup tape without restoring it to the
server and potentially loosing data if something is incorrect on the tape?
2. Since a tape drive does not appear to work the same as a regular disk
drive, how do I see what is on the tape without completely restoring all the
data. Can I check for one or two files?
