Windows automatic updates don't download

I recently realized that 10 computers in our other office haven't
downloaded any Windows Updates, despite being set to do it
automatically. All are running W2k, and there is a server and a router
on the network. The other 6 computers download them automatically, so
it's not a network problem. It happens with several types of HP
computer, but there is at least one working computer of each type, so
it's not the model.
I've also tried using the Windows Update link from the Start menu. It
finds all the needed updates, but I get an error message when I tell it
to download and install them. I checked everything the Windows site said
to try in their link from the error message.
Finally I tried copying the update number, and downloading from Windows
Search. That works fine, so they can be downloaded, just not from the
automatic or Update locations. Anyway, downloading one at a time on
each machine is quite tedious with 32 updates waiting, and doesn't
solve the problem.
Can anyone think of something that I can fix that would be causing the
problem? Thanks
