    I don't prefer disabling antivirus before updates, because that is not the
    normal procedure for installing them. Automatic patch management tools
    etc. don't shut down virus software and I think that no-one should do that
    under normal circumstances. I understand what you are after - that the
    virus scanner causes the installation to fail on some part - or IE uses
    files that the explorer tries to change. But that's where file replacement
    via reboot comes into picture. If these methods don't work, they should be
    fixed, and the user should not be forced to do excessive amount of work
    which causes the security measures to be lowered for some time.

    I managed to uninstall this fix already, because otherwise I wouldn't have
    known that it caused this. We will do some testing on several w2k machines
    before distributing this to all computers again. I should have pointed out
    in my message that I was just looking for similar experiences (which I
    found in the internet via Google) and tried to warn others that if they
    experience this, this might be the cause.

    Anyway, thanks for the answer - that might still help others trying to
    uninstall it.
