Cannot use windows update!

I have recently performed a non destructivre system restore on my PC and
since then I have been unable to use Windows update.

I have installed XP SP 2 from a disc and the security centre informs me that
automatic updates are not on, but when i checked in the system tab, they are.
Security centre also told me that it could not turn on auto updates and told
me to do it manually.

When I goto the Windows update page It freezes on the page that says
"Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software..."

I have tried several times but it just goes to this page and stays there
everytime, I have even left it overnight!

Im am running XP Home, with a 2ghz processor, 256MB RAM and a cable modem.
