The operating system loads only necessary services to run the computer in
safe mode which is why software firewalls are bypassed and they usually run
as a service already. If you have a cable/dsl modem you may want to look
into using a NAT router/firewall device to manage internet access also. The
go for around $30 to start after rebates. You could also enable your
computers cmos or use syskey [enter syskey at command prompt] for the
operating system that would require a password before the computer starts up
or the operating system is loaded. The downside is that you will need to
enter the password whenever the computer is rebooted which can be caused by
things like power outages. Syskey can be easily enabled/disabled or have the
password changed if you have to give it out over the phone or such. ---
