Good Firewalls or Proxys (pick your favorite brand) can all stop
applications from phoning home at the parameter. Keeping personal firewalls
properly (and uniformly) configured can turn into a nightmare....and then
you have to consider what business apllications they might interferre with
which can happen immediately or anytime along the way as Apps get updated
and/or have features added.
