I understand your confusion. That knowledge base has all the answers -
but just try to find them!

Yes, it is possible to have a fully functional home network with
firewalls operating on each computer. My home network operates this way.

Whether you need firewalls on each computer is for you to decide. Your
DSL router provides an adequate amount of protection from the outside
world. Firewalls on your home network may be needed to protect the
computers from each other.

I decided that I need firewalls on each computer because my niece will
come over with her virus-infected laptop and connect up to my home network.

Page 3 covers allowing exceptions. For home network file sharing, just
make sure that "File and Printer Sharing" exception is checked.
