Reset IP number on DSL modem?

I have a cable modem and when I feel the need to, I can
release and renew my ip address with a hard reset. My
friend has a DSL modem and claims not to be able to change
the ip address? I don't have experience with DSL, but it
seems to me that it would work the same??? Can anyone
enlighten me on why or why not? Thanks in advance!
