Computer Security Rule to live by
1. Think security - if not sure do not open or install.
2. If asked to download a file if not sure what it does, do not download
3. Backup you computer- your hard drive will fail some time so be prepared
4. Do not open e-mails from people you do not know
5. Do not open attachments if you are not positive you know what they are.
6. If the e-mail offers some to good to be true it, probably is a scam
7. Use anti-virus software - update it at least once a day or more
8. Patch your computer's operating system (all vendors have updates)
9. Patch you applications (word, games, mail programs, etc.)
10. Get a firewall use it and then check for patches and updates for it.
11. Change the default password on your firewall
11. Be smart, know what services run on you computer, and what ports are
open.
12 Use anti- spy ware software to check for spy programs
13. Stay away from peer to peer sharing software programs.
14. Think! Computer Security is more about what you do or don't do.
15. If you computer has a Trojan or worm, you can try and fix it BUT it
probably has more that 1 Trojan or worm, better rebuild if you want to be
truly secure.
16. If it a virus call 1-866-pc safety
17. Learn what to do and practice safe computing
18. Educate your self by looking at
www.microsoft.com/security/protect/default.asp
19. Think, before you click.
20. If you use wireless set up using WPA or at least WEP, read you manual
for directions.
21. Remember if you are proactive the chances of you getting hack is low
22. I you are using old operating system you are a greater risk of getting
hacked, upgrade and patch regularly, this includes windows, UNIX and Linux!
