I say neither is "better", although I prefer Spybot S&D and if I was to
recommend only one, it would be Spybot Search and Destroy. Why? It has
more features (free) than Lavasoft AdAware. It has a built in immunization
feature, it recommends in that feature another product I use regularly
(SpywareBlaster) and its interface has improved greatly over time.

Yeah - for the simple home user who doesn't want extra features and just a
point-n-click application, Lavasoft AdAware certainly gets the job done.
Recently Lavasoft AdAware has, in fact, updated more often than Spybot
Search and Destroy. However, if you run one, then the other, you almost (on
machines that have never used either) find something the other missed.

I would suggest HIGHLY every home user use and donate to the following three
products at the very least:
(for Spyware)

Lavasoft AdAware
Spybot Search and Destroy
Javacool's SpywareBlaster

As for who is "actually" better - if anyone - who cares?
