These do deal with NetBIOS from what I remember. From what you just said,
you have a standalone Windows XP PC. Well the answer for if you need it or
not, is you don't. Just go into Services under Administration Tools. There you
should review services that you do not need running. Browser, server, and the
NetBIOS related services among with many others should be disabled. Read
over the descriptions and disable the ones you don't need once again. Asides
from building a horribly-buggy operating system with a horrible architecture as
it is, Microsoft squeezes in plenty of services that you do not need by default.
Running these services produces great risks of "getting owned". Microsoft fails
to notify their clients about turning off these services - this does lead to damage
and theft of data if a cracker visits with whatever desires. Turning off services,
greatly reduces risks of entry.

On a final note, my advice is to Windows in the first place. I will rip off the COA
sticker off the Windows machine, scratch the CD and break to pieces, and install
Linux the Windows machine I own. Linux will provide you with an error-free, secure
computing experience. Try Knoppix for a change - it takes a little more effort to get
used to with the console and somewhat with the KDE window-manager- but you
will enjoy it and its all free.
