in case anyone cares how this was resolved....

In Safe Mode, use Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and remove KB835732
from what I understand, this particular update is causing several problems.

After removing, I was magically able to release/renew my TCP/IP config once again, and my computer started getting an IP address dynamically from my DCHP router. And also, got out to the internet fine.

Life is good once again.
