I really don't want to get into this argument, but whose fence do you see
out there with fewer holes in it?
Saying you could do it yourself isn't a valid answer, unless you believe you
can provide a product which meets the myriad international standards that
Windows does, and is capable of being used in the myriad different ways.
It can definitely be improved--no doubt about it. Every Microsoft staffer I
have ever met cares passionately about the product--they don't want the
holes either.
If I get into more detail I'd be talking about stuff I don't have first-hand
knowledge of, so I'll shut up. Complex problems aren't susceptable to
simplistic solutions.
