Thanks Charlie. Actually, that's the reason that I originally posted my
question to this group. The stuff that I found on Google either said that
it's an ITunes thing or a spyware thing. Since I don't have ITunes
installed on anything, I thought that some expert in this group might offer
some insight.
The reason that I suspected the GEARSecurity service in the first place was
that the program file has no vendor or description information in its
version resource, and the service manager doesn't show any text in the
"description" field. Now, the article that you cite in your email contains
screen shots that clearly show that the Apple service displays a
description. And, now that I know that this thing is supposedly from Apple,
I can't believe that the program file doesn't have the usual description,
copyright, etc. stuff in the version resource.
All of which raises the obvious question: If it's malware, how did it get
installed as a service? I run McAfee antivirus software and work, and
Norton antivirus at home. I keep both up-to-date on virus definitions. Yet
I see the same questionable service on my computers both at work and at
home. I just did a quick survey of some of my coworkers' computers, and
some have the service while others don't. Curious...
