decrypting files

I had a problem with my computer and used the system recovery cd to reinstall windows xp home without formating my files.

After that was done I could no longer access my old files because they were set to private before so now I get the message "access denied whenever i try to access any of my files"
 Is there a way to access them again or is it lost ?
