It is easy to confuse Preview and AutoPreview functions in Outlook. In
fact, the "Preview" pane is misnamed. It isn't a preview at all since
you download the entire message and can see ALL of it in the view pane.
There is no difference in how the message is rendered in the misnamed
"Preview" pane and how it is rendered when you double-click on it to
show in a separate window. The "Preview" pane is really a *View* pane.
AutoPreview is better named in that it automatically shows as text only
the first lines of each message but does not list the entire message.
The [Pre]view pane is a separate pane. AutoPreview is not a pane in
itself but additional text-only output shown after each message in the
item list pane.
Just as it is easy to misunderstood which view mode is being discussed
(Preview *pane* versus AutoPreview *mode*), Microsoft's stupid decision
to rename Internet Mail & News has also caused confusion with lots of
users thinking OE is a 'lite' version of Outlook. I have to assume the
poster meant what they said (unless it is obvious they are mistaken).
The OP indicated they needed information regarding security of the
AutoPreview mode within the Outlook product.
I don't use OE for e-mail so I'm not familiar with an AutoPreview-like
function in OE. From a cursory glance through OE6's options, there is
no AutoPreview mode. All you get in OE is the [Pre]View pane. So you
need to incorporate something in addition to OE to eliminate web bugs,
like SpamPal with its HTML-Modify plug-in. Since SpamPal runs as a
proxy, it works with any POP3/SMTP e-mail client, like Outlook and
Outlook Express. So you could still use [Pre]View mode in either of
these clients along with HTML-Modify to strip out any web bugs.
