Hi! Here's what I found on this in my 2004-version.

Hope it applies to your problem as well.

pasted :

Office Plug-in protects Microsoft Office documents from viruses, worms, and
virus-like activities. It scans documents whenever you open them in a
Microsoft Office program. Office Plug-in is enabled in Options.

If you have set a password for Options, Norton AntiVirus asks you for
the password before you can view or adjust the settings.

To check Office Plug-in status

a.. In the main window, click Options.
If a menu appears, click Norton AntiVirus.
b.. In the left pane of the Options window, under Other, click
Miscellaneous.
c.. Verify that Office Plug-in is enabled.
Best of luck!

I don't know if this is the right place to ask this question, but I don't
know any other place, so here you go:
I'm using Norton 2002 as my AV program. Everything works well, except for
the fact that it insists on checking every document I open in Word and
Excel. It's extremely annoying and I can't find any place to turn off this
"feauture"...
I've set the program NOT to check outgoing mail. The radio button dealing
with MS Office is greyed out and not available.
Help will be much appreciated...
Thanks,
Mark
