www.grisoft.com is free antivirus. make sure your antivirus is set to
download updates automatically every week, and is actually receiving them.

I've been reading newsgroups for nearly a decade and have never gotten a
virus from them.. but then again, I don't open attachments, especially not
attachments where the person clearly wants me to open it. Reading
newsgroups through http://groups.google.com might be safer.
