Dail-Up Password won't save properly

Each time iI access the internet in any way the login password pop's up with 16 dots. I change t to the 7 dots representing characters in my password and click SAVE .. but it never does this properly. I have deleted this network connection and re-established it to no avail.. why can't Win XP save my password coreectly?
