"search" history

when I type the first letter, "a" for example if I was
doing a search for apples, into the search window on my
home page of my browser, I get a drop-down list of all
searches I've done starting with "a" i.e. a search
history....is there any way to delete these items, or
better yet, to disable the search history function?
