Antivirus installation - Norton Internet Security is a pain in the ****

My Toshiba laptop is running Windows ME. Like a fool, I
did not back up my home computer. Most of my files were
rescued, but I had to reformat. The person who retrieved
my files said I should get Norton Internet Security and
install it before I downloaded any updates. I followed
his advice, but then Explorer started doing strange things
like just stopping in the middle of a game or a search.
With help from Microsoft, I determined that it wasn't a
Windows problem (it was due to the firewall) and that I
needed to uninstall Internet Security and reinstall.
Unfortunately, I did not go through Add/Remove and didn't
remove everything. I contacted Norton (email - phone costs
even on a new product)who directed me to all kinds of
downloads and instructions, all of which I have followed
to no avail. Even after I know the files are completely
gone (I am asked for my product code), I keep getting an
error message that "MSI must be launched through setup."
The irony is - I didn't need a firewall because we have a
router for our home network. However, I still need to
install the virus protection and the Symantec tech seems
to be clueless. I have gone back and forth with Symantec
six times now and am ready to throw this thing in the
trash. Help!!!
