incorporate some decent basic security tools as part of the OS. How about a
tool for Windows 2000/XP which will break down the security logs into some
useful information without a big production and use of third party software?
Microsoft is getting better about this. But don't hold your breath.
Getting good security will always require third party tools, because there
will always be a third party tool that does security in a way that's more to
your individual needs. And that's true whether you're talking Microsoft,
*nix or whatever. Microsoft can't bundle five different free firewalls and
three different free sniffers from third party vendors with its OS, like
*nix can, and still offer tech support that is affordable for all those
configurations... nor would you want them to do so, because then doing tech
support at your company would be a headache with all the different software
variations.
