This is right up my alley! I'm studying Network Security
and will try to help. Basically, hackers are a pain, not
a threat. I don't use anti-viral software in order to
study the pathology of computer viruses. (I don't
recommend it otherwise!) The ones I've caught have been
obnoxious, but haven't ruined anything on my system.
Here are my tips.
1) Keep all personal info on a separate hard
drive/computer system that is never used for the
internet.. (Cheap used systems are available on eBay)
2) Keep your software/anti-viral software up to date.
Download updates from Microsoft as frequenly as
possible. Download all security patches.
3) Turn off any services that you don't use. Firewalls
only guard ports they're told to guard.
To turn off unused services:
Go to start-> control panel -> administrative tools->
services. Turn off the majority of remote access
services. Those are killers. Turn off "messenger".
Turn off "automatic updates" (especially if you are
constantly connected to the internet).
4) Finally, TALK with your friend. Tell him/her your
concerns and find out what would make this person take
revenge on you by destroying your system. Work out the
wrinkles. He/she may actually be pleased to show off
what they know about hacking by explaining it, instead of
demonstrating it the sneaky way. Good luck!
