I suspect you are actually running Windows XP and have installed MSN
Messenger. You've still got Windows Messenger, a legitimate Windows
component, running.
You don't want to "get rid of it" as it does more for you than you may have
thought and is best left on your computer, but you can stop it running in
your system tray and annoying you by opening it up and going to tools,
options, preferences tab, and remove the ticks from the first two options.
