I don't -uh- buy that argument. You can plonk down a thousand dollars or so
for a computer and other gear, but you can't afford the software that you
need? Re-analyse your priorities and your needs, to find a price for the
hardware _and_ software, look into alternatives (there are some free
alternatives that should free up money to use on those that don't have free
alternatives available), and use software that you're licenced to use.

In which case it would definitely be appopriate to make some form of redress
for past misdeeds, and pay appropriate prices for legal copies of software
you need - assuming, that is, that the companies in question aren't out of
business already.

Definitely look into discounts, different versions, or competing products.
There are other ways to get cheap or free software, including attending
seminars and sales presentations, where such software is often given away or
raffled off, or at the very least, coupons are usually given out.
While I will agree that many people are 'strapped for cash', that doesn't
give them the right to use software against the wishes of the software's
developers.
