    Why do you feel it is a "travesty"?
    It really is not a good idea to have two AV applications running at
    the same time.
    Perhaps you caused your own issues by running one and installing the
    other.
    AV applications should also be disabled during updates.
    Another source of possible self inflicted issues.

    What firewall did you have installed?
    If you had a firewall installed, why was it not properly configured
    before you connected online?

    You should start over with a Clean Installation, this time taking
    precautions such as a firewall before connecting the network cable to
    the internet.
